The Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ), the largest journalist organization in the non-aligned world and the pioneering trade union for media persons in Independent India, recently marked the monumental completion of its 75 glorious years since its establishment in 1950.
This historic milestone was celebrated with a nationwide observance aptly named the ‘Grand Assembly of Journalists’. These magnificent events, which took place on October 28th, were not only a powerful display of unprecedented unity within the journalism community but also a profound and heartfelt tribute to one of the field’s most respected stalwarts, the organization’s National President, Dr. K. Vikram Rao.

The 75th Foundation Day of the IFWJ was celebrated throughout India as a major festival dedicated to promoting the unity of journalists and forging new resolutions for the profession’s future. Recognised as the oldest and most robust body in Indian journalism, the IFWJ now boasts over 30,000 members.
Provincial chapters of the Federation organized extensive seminars, prestigious award ceremonies, and commitment meetings. These successful events spanned regions across the country, covering states including Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal, Uttarakhand, Rajasthan, Odisha, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Maharashtra. In every ceremony held on this historic occasion, the struggles and foundational efforts of the organization’s founders and senior members were respectfully and thankfully remembered.
During this national event, all state units paid deep homage to Dr. K. Vikram Rao. Speakers affectionately recalled his unforgettable leadership and his unmatched contributions, noting that under his capable command, the IFWJ had carved out a distinct position for itself on both national and international stages.

Crucially, it was highlighted that the long-standing demand for the Journalist Protection Act was the cherished brainchild of Dr. K. Vikram Rao, who championed its drafting and pushed for its legislative acceptance. Journalists from across the country took a firm pledge: to fulfill his incomplete work by ensuring the immediate implementation of this Act and guaranteeing the organization remains fearless and strong in all its endeavours to serve the media community.
The events focused sharply on the major demands and concerns critical to the well-being and security of journalists. IFWJ demands
The immediate implementation of the Journalist Protection Act (Dr. Rao’s key legacy).
The introduction of essential welfare schemes for journalists, notably an old-age allowance.
The crucial importance of maintaining sustained nationwide journalistic unity.
This 75th anniversary reasserts the IFWJ’s unyielding commitment to the high ethical standards and impartiality of Indian journalism. As a Trade Union organization that has historically fought for labour gains, wage boards, and the creation of media bodies, the IFWJ is set to remain a vital source of inspiration for both current and future journalists, carrying forward the brave vision of its leaders.
